Perhaps the most single important step of owning a fish tank is also among the most misunderstood parts of owning one. Unless you have been doing your homework and researching fish tanks you probably have not heard of the Nitrogen cycle. Tank cycling is a very important step in establishing your new tank and if not done properly can cause failure from the beginning. In fact, many new fish owners fail in their first month of owning a tank.

Before we start we need to understand what the Nitrogen cycle is. Fish create waste, these waste products are broken down into Ammonia by beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria converts harmful wastes into something less harmful, which is called Nitrite. Nitrite is finally broken down into Nitrate, which is less toxin than either Ammonia and Nitrate. Typically it takes from anywhere from three to six weeks for there to be enough beneficial bacteria to effectively provide enough biological filtration.

The Nitrogen cycle is necessary to keep the water free of waste that cannot be filtered no other way, but while the Nitrogen is going through the process of cycling to establish enough beneficial bacteria to provide proper biological filtration, the fish are exposed to high levels of Ammonia and Nitrite, which can harm them and even result in death. Even if you do not see the effects right away it takes a toll on them and often leads to a shorten life span.

To avoid this you can perform fishless cycling, this is very simple. All you will need is Ammonia. This can be found at most department stores, just make sure it’s pure Ammonia and not Ammonia that has any additives because it can harm the fish. You will need an eye dropper to drop Ammonia in the tank and test kit to test for Ammonia, pH, Nitrate and Nitrite. You want the tank to be well oxygenated because the bacteria requires oxygen to grow. The tank should also be fully setup with heater, filter and other things you’ll have in the tank.

Add four to five drops of pure Ammonia per 10 gallons of water to the Nitrites becomes measurable, at this point you want to cut back on how much Ammonia you add to two to three drops per day. If at any point the Ammonia and Nitrite levels are off the chart you should make a water changes to Ammonia and Nitrite levels down. Usually a 15 to 25 percent water change will be the amount you need to change, but this does vary from case to case.

When Nitrite and Ammonia are both at zero, the pH is stable and Nitrate is measurable, the tank is considered cycled. A water change of 25% and up to 50% is recommend at this point. After that you should be able to start stocking your tank with fish. The whole process usually takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on temperature and filtration. Remember, if you don’t add fish right away you need to continue to add Ammonia until you introduce fish.

If you rather you can also simply add fish food to the tank. As fish food decays and rots it will release Ammonia. This will start the process of the Nitrogen cycle. Just add a little food each day to keep feeding it. Although, this may be a bit more difficult because you have to put a certain amount of food to get enough decaying food to produce enough Ammonia and this takes a little practice to get the right amount.

There is also the old fashion way of doing this. Adding two to three hardy fish to start the process. These fish must be very hardy because they will need to be tough enough to withstand the high levels of Ammonia and Nitrites that they will face. These fish may become sick and die as they are exposed to such high levels of Ammonia and Nitrite. A few fish that are known as good starter fish and are hardy are Guppies and platies.

What to expect

During the first week to two weeks you will see a steady rise in Ammonia and will reach lethal levels. During this time the beneficial bacteria will start to grow to the point where it can convert Ammonia. During this time period to reduce stress on fish (If you added fish to start the cycle) you will want to perform 15-25% water changes to reduce the stress on fish. This will help keep Ammonia levels down.

After that you will see a drop in Ammonia levels and a spike in Nitrites. Over the next week or two the bacteria needed to convert Nitrites to the less harmful Nitrates will begin and build enough to see it drop to zero. During this period you will need to perform 15-20% water changes to reduce the stress on fish. This will help keep Nitrite levels down.

At this point you should begin to get Nitrate readings. There is only one way to remove it and that is through water changes. You will need to do weekly water changes of 10 to 15 percent. Fish can tolerate levels of around 40-50ppm, but it is best to not let it reach levels near that. If it reaches levels over 20 ppm it is best to perform a 20 to 25 percent water change.

When people start out with tropical freshwater aquariums, they think all they have to do is buy a tank, fill it with water and fish and then feed the fish. That is probably why over 50 to 75% of the people who start this hobby fail.

There are many things you need to know to properly raise tropical fish in a home aquarium. Once you know how to raise tropical fish, it is very easy to keep your fish healthy and happy. In fact, knowledge of how to raise freshwater fish will save you a lot of troubles down the road.

Here are some of the topics you need to be knowledgeable about

Nitrogen Cycle – The first thing you need to understand is the Nitrogen Cycle. This is where you develop several bacteria colonies that will keep the ammonia and nitrites levels down. These two chemicals, even at very low levels, are extremely toxic to your tropical fish.

Substrate – You will need to understand what substrate is for. It is the stuff at the bottom of your aquarium and will hold some of the bacteria colonies you develop.

Feeding – How much to feed your fish is important. Most people overfeed their fish which will create excess waste at the bottom of your tank and will decay to nitrates. Nitrates, though not deadly to your fish like ammonia and nitrites, can cause your fish to be unhealthy and produce excess algae in your tank.

Cleaning and Water Replacement – You will also need to understand how to clean your tank, the frequency of cleaning and the frequency and amount of water to replace in your tank.

These are just a few of the items you need to understand before you start your tropical fish aquarium. But once you understand these issues it will take you less than an hour a week to keep your fish healthy and happy.

How To Get This Knowledge

If you think that going on the Internet will give you this information you would be wrong. The most you will get is conflicting information. The best way to find out how to keep tropical fish is to read books written by qualified authors.

While or after you read these books, you will have many questions. To receive the answers you need, join a tropical fish forum. These forums have people who have been keeping fish in their homes or businesses for years. They will have the answers you need, plus they will have lots of lessons learned.

So you have just gotten an indoor dog and need to know when to take it outside to use the bathroom? Well this can be a frustrating thing to deal with because one second it can seem like your puppy is ok and the next you find that he or she has used the bathroom everywhere. This article will help show people learning how to potty train a puppy signs that their dog may need to use the bathroom.

If you know what to look for you can easily tell when your dog need to use the bathroom. The first thing to look for is your dog will start sniffing around the floor like they had dropped some food somewhere. Dogs sometimes normally do this if they find a scent that interests them, so don’t be alarmed if your puppy starts doing this when you are in the room.

The next thing to look for is your dog will begin pacing with heavy steps back and forth. Some dogs do this very noticeably while other dogs may do this very subtlety. Either way, you will want to look for this because when you see your dog doing this it means you will need to take him or her outside to use the bathroom.

The final thing to look for is for your dog to crouch to the floor, like they are squatting down, or if you have a male dog for them to hike or lift their leg up. When you see this, you are only moments away from your puppy pottying everywhere. What you should do is you should clap your hands and yell loudly enough to startle you dog. When they are startled they will not use the bathroom. When they have stopped what they were doing, immediately take them outside and have them do their business. As always, you should give your dog a treat when they go to the bathroom in the right place, don’t forget to treat your pup.

If you are developing an aquarium, it is important that you have fish that are compatible with each other. If you have fish that are compatible, then you will have fewer problems in your aquarium. Here are the different fish categories so you can stock your aquarium with the same category of fish.

Categories Of Fish

There are three categories of freshwater fish that Aquarist use to identify fish that are compatible with each other. These categories allow people who are developing aquariums to select fish that will get along with each other. These categories are:

    Community
Semi-Aggressive
Aggressive

You can look on the Internet for fish that belong to each category, but I suggest you go to your fish pet store to look for fish in each category. When I compared the Internet to the fish pet store, they were different. So I went with the way the fish pet store had them classified since I know they are professionals.

Categories

Here is how each category is defined:

Community – If you have community fish in one aquarium you have an aquarium called a Community Aquaria. That is a tank that has more than one species of fish. These are ones that require the same type of water and most important they have the same temperament. They are not aggressive toward other fish and are relatively peaceful.

When you select your community fish, select several of the same species so they can “hang” together. It is always best to select an odd number of fish of the same species, such as three or five.

Semi-Aggressive – Fish that fall into this category and are very active. They will also have aggressive action towards each other or other fish.

I have a 75-gallon freshwater semi-aggressive tank that contains Kissing Gourami, Three Spot Blue Gourami, African Featherfin Catfish and Tiger Barbs.

Aggressive – These fish are very aggressive and will harass fish of other species. They should not be mixed with other species but kept in a species only aquarium.

In general, do not mix fish of different categories in the same aquarium or you will have trouble.

Conclusion

When setting up an aquarium, it is important to know the different categories the freshwater fish fall into, before you buy your fish. If you do not know the categories, visit your fish pet store since they will have the fish divided into the different categories of community, semi-aggressive and aggressive.

If you are the proud owner of a cute little chihuahua, you will know all about the love that this most docile of breeds can offer. It is often said that these animals are more than just a dog, they have such unique personalities and emotions that they seem almost human. Ensuring that your pet stays as healthy as possible requires more than just choosing a suitable food to give to them each day. Chihuahua coats and other clothing can help prevent them falling sick as a result of being exposed to extreme weather.

Dog clothing is also a very stylish type of product to avail of. Small breeds have become a common sight alongside various celebrities, who themselves spend a lot of time and money ensuing that their cute pets look as cool and suave as possible.

When checking out various doggy clothes, the first thing you will discover is that there are a huge assortment of products you could invest in. Always remember that there are two main purposes for investing in chihuahua coats and other items, namely they should be practical and also attractive.

To begin with, you should decide on which type of garments to buy and dress your pet up in. As chihuahua have very short hair, they can easily fall sick if exposed to cold temperatures. A warm coat should be at the top of your shopping list, as should a waterproof jacket for when going on walks in the rain. Other garments you may want to get hold of include t-shirts, sweaters, and cute little booties.

Take your time to check out as many designs as you can. Think about what type of colors and styles would best suit the personality of your pet. For example, if they are fun loving and lively, bright shades would make a great choice. On the other hand, if they are quiet and shy, neutral pastel shades may be a better option.

Another important consideration to think about is the size and age of your dog. If they are still a puppy, consider that any coats and clothes you buy may become too small after a few months. When checking out what garments are available, be clear on what size and age of dog they are designed for. You would not want to spend your money on a selection of items only to discover that they are not suitable.

You should also think about what garments would be suitable for different seasons. If you live in a region with cold winters, warm woolen coats can make a good investment. On the other hand, during the summer months, lighter fabrics may be a better choice. A variety of outfits may be needed if the weather in your region is erratic and variable.

No matter whether you want to buy chihuahua coats, t-shirts, booties or other items, you should find that you have access to the greatest variety of products by shopping online. No matter what your tastes, by using a net based retailer you should be able to pick items that your dog cherishes and for an affordable price.

Housetraining can be a breeze if you use dog-friendly methods. It is as simple as preventing mistakes (using on-leash supervision and confinement) and rewarding your dog for eliminating in the right spot (indoors on pads, paper, or litter; or outdoors). Being a good doggy time manager is what house training is all about- making sure that your dog is in the right place at the right time. Mistakes happen because the dog is either in the right place at the wrong time or in the wrong place at the right time. If, for example, you take your dog for a walk to relieve himself when he doesn’t need to go, he will probably need to go when he gets back inside! This is an example of being in the right place (outside) at the wrong time (when he doesn’t need to go). Once the dog gets back inside, you have an example of being in the wrong place (inside) at the right time (when he needs to go).

During house training, your dog needs to be taken to his doggy toilet (the right place) when he needs to eliminate (the right time), and he needs to be rewarded for going. All you have to do is make sure you don’t give him the opportunity to make any mistakes in the wrong spot, and pretty soon your dog will have developed a strong habit and desire to eliminate in a particular area-his doggy toilet. Developing this strong habit is the essence of house training.

Dogs usually need a trip to the doggy toilet thirty to ninety minutes after eating a meal or drinking, so a well-planned feeding and watering schedule will help you determine when your dog will need to relieve himself. Your dog will also need to go after playing and when he wakes up. So you can be pretty sure that your dog will need to go to the bathroom when he wakes up, soon after eating and drinking, and after playing. This is especially true with puppies who haven’t yet developed strong bladder and bowel muscles.

However, successful house training requires more accurately predicting when your dog needs to go. The best way to do so is to use confinement. Confining your dog to a small area, such as a crate, inhibits him from eliminating because most puppies and dogs naturally want to keep their sleeping areas clean. So your dog will need to eliminate when you release him from his crate and take him to his doggy toilet.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that confining your dog is cruel. Using confinement in an educated manner is not unkind, especially considering how it accelerates house training (and chew-toy training) and therefore how quickly your dog can be trusted to spend his time in all safe areas of your home. We use confinement to help keep our children safe (for example, cribs), and we can likewise use it with our dogs.

Choosing a family puppy must be something that is given serious thought. It is not like buying a new shirt or something like that as there is much to consider. You might say what all needs to be considered and must I worry about it now? There is the breed to consider and there are so many breeds this can become a difficult choice. Then with the breed you have ultra small dogs to huge dogs and this has to be considered. Do you live in an apartment, house with a fenced in yard or maybe you live in the country this should be considered. Maybe you are considering a hobby of dog shows so you will be thinking about a show dog.

Where are you thinking about getting the puppy from a Puppy Store and this is not the best place to start as this can give you a bad experience but not all stores. Still these should be checked out in advance. The Humane Society might be a wonderful place to start if you really are not breed specific and can get a great dog at a great price with all shots, spayed or neutered and ready for a good home. If you are thinking a certain breed check out local breeders in your area and even if it is not the breed you are thinking about still be a great starting place.

Breeders are a wealth of information and can also point you in the right direction. Don’t be surprised if they suggest an out a state breeder so for a high quality breed specific puppy you might have to travel so be prepared. There is just so much to consider that you must give it a lot of thought or you can make a very big mistake and the puppy will be the one that loses in the end.

My wife and I just went through getting a puppy and we were looking for a Cairn terrier that we can show for conformation. We did days and weeks of studying the breed and breeders all of the country and even Great Britain and in that area. It even turned into months and even if you are not going to get a show dog you still should put this kind of time into your research on a puppy.

One of the first things we did when we finally got our puppy was to begin thinking about how we were going to train him. Yes on top of all the other you now all of a sudden have this puppy at home and more to think about with training. How do you plan on training the family puppy and this is important for you and the puppy. For our puppy we have adapted a couple different methods and worked them together. You should start with one method and then the more you do then maybe another method will be helpful. You my find that the one method is working for you and so just stick with it.

Just want to remind you that with all this homework you will be doing don’t forget you will be training this puppy and it will take a lot of your time. You won’t want a puppy that isn’t trained and first off he won’t learn to be potty trained with out your help in training. The thing about having a puppy and soon to be grown dog you cannot take any days off and say not today. They will always need doors opened for them, food put in their bowl, water for them all the time and this is just a few of what they cannot do for their selves. They are worth all your time and effort you give them so it is important to know as much as possible before getting a puppy.

Like the nocturnal bird for which they are named, owl monkeys are the only known species of nocturnal monkeys. These animals are also compared to owls due to their very small external ears, which give them a round bird-headed appearance and very large owl-like eyes.

A major difference between owls and owl monkeys is that owls are predatory birds and owl monkeys eat mainly fruits and plants. They will occasionally eat small insects when their normal food is scarce. They are more active during nights when the moon is brightest relying on their keen sense of depth perception rather than using color distinction as the daytime species of monkeys would.

Owl monkeys do not form a large group as many other New World species of monkeys do. Their range in Central and South America is from sea level to mountainous areas. The higher they live above sea level, the greater the thickness of their fur. They are found at all levels of canopy in the rainforests and are rarely if ever seen on the ground. They prefer to sleep during the day in tree trunk cavities or in thick brush and have their activities during the late evening and at night.

Small family groups will consist of a mated pair and one singleton born per year that will leave the family unit after a couple of years. This creates a family unit of up to 5 if the young are slow to leave the family. They were once thought to be totally monogamous, but the original pair can be split up during the life of the family. This is partially due to the fact that males and females mature at different ages, so naturally they will reach their sexual peak and decline at different times. Mature adults from other groups will show aggression if they wish to become the new member of the family and if the existing mate is unable to fight them off, they will surrender.

The males have the role of carrying the young, except during the time of nursing. It is believed that the males sense they are stronger than the females that are weakened by pregnancy, birth, and nursing. The males would be more capable of getting the young to a safe area in an emergency or if the group were attacked. If the male is attacked or killed, however, the female will usually not resume the primary care for the infant. Sometimes a sibling will be old enough and strong enough to take over, or else the infant will be lost. This is normal in nature with other species too. These male primates are also in charge of discouraging the young from nursing and being carried. This often causes stress and conflict within the family.

Owl monkeys are very interesting for their oddities and their differences from other monkey species.

Red eared sliders can make charming pets and life long friends. They are fun to watch and can live long if proper care is taken. They are both inimitable and fascinating. If you are keen to bring this cute little pet home, then you must prepare yourself and your house for this additional new member. You must keep an important thing in mind before the purchase that the cute tiny hatchlings will grow into huge, long-lived and most importantly, somewhat messy turtles.

If you are a slider turtle enthusiast and are impatiently waiting for one to befriend then there are some things that you must know before getting one as a pet.

Those Little Hatchlings Will Turn Huge!

Did you know that these delicate-looking turtles grow to an adult size of up to 12 inches? Even though they take a few years to grow to their full adult size, you must still realize that your red eared slider will require a very large space in your house. Do not make the mistake of buying a little tank for the turtle and count on approximately 10 gallons per inch of the turtle.

Red Eared Sliders Live Long

The expected life of a red eared slider is up to 40 years or so. When buying the turtle, do remember that you are committing yourself to take care of the turtle over its entire lifespan. Moreover, you need to make sure that your turtle do not get out into the wild when it gets older. They will suffer badly in the cold.

Don’t Make the Mistake of Keeping Red Eared Sliders in Little Plastic Bowls

Don’t listen to the salesperson if they tell you that you can keep your red-eared slider in plastic bowls, because if you do, then your cute hatchling turtle will not thrive in the little bowl. What you must do is, get appropriate housing equipments / tools for the turtle according to the number of turtles, and their size.

Red Slider Turtle Are Food Lovers- Watch Out!

The fun part about these turtles is that they love food. The moment they see you bring the food, they will get excited. However, obesity is a big problem in turtles and you must not over feed them. They will do crazy acts to make you feed them. They will swim back and forth recklessly but don’t be fooled by it and simply enjoy their acts.

Mess, Mess. Red Ear Sliders Are Messy!

Just like every other turtle, the slider turtles make a lot of waste which can make the tank smelly and algae can grow in it. Cleaning the tank should be your top priority. Your tank must have a filter that is rated for 2-3 times the amount of water of the tank. You must also feed your turtle in a container of water outside the tank.

When purchasing a sugar glider, it is important to assess how much you really want to own one and if you are ready to learn about the necessary information related to the care of the animal. It is a given that you should know how to care for your sugar glider. However, has it ever crossed your mind to take a look on how you can get a healthy one to take care of? Although you may be truly willing to give your new pet the best care possible, you should already start putting adequate attention even at the time you purchase the glider.

Basically, sugar gliders are not natives of America. They are marsupials that come from the wilderness of Australia. Because of this, you might find it difficult to find them in pet shops within your area. This is why people who are hoping to keep one as a pet would turn to the Internet and look for breeders online.

Indeed, the Internet offers the most convenient way to find anything that you may be looking for. You can shop for anything over the Internet – yes, even pets such as sugar gliders. However, even if everyone considers the Internet as a very useful tool for finding products and services that they wanted, you can never be so sure with it when it comes to pet trade. To get you started with your search for a pet online, be wary of suspicious looking websites and ultimately, stay away from sellers who would offer shipping the glider to an airport near you. You also need to be wary of sellers who offer their sugar gliders at an outrageously low price. Although getting a glider at an affordable price can be considered a great deal, you should ensure that the gliders they are selling are of good shape.

Whatever you do, never forget that you should only buy a glider from a good breeder. A good breeder, although he might not intend to keep all the baby gliders to himself, should exhibit concern and care to the baby gliders. And this will show on how he will offer to sell you the joeys. As mentioned above, you should not trust a breeder who offers to ship the animal alone.

Airplane shipment is not the best way to get a pet especially if it is shipped alone. Baby animals, particularly baby sugar gliders, can receive a lot of stress and trauma during the travel. More so, the travel conditions can cause long term health problems to the joeys – and even death.

The best way to receive your glider is when the breeder volunteers to personally show you the animal. He can either go to your location personally or he invites you to go to his for you to see all of the ones that he is taking care of. Both of these methods will work because your main goal is to be able to see the glider personally before you pay for it. However, the second one is better may be a better option because you will be able to see how the sugar gliders are taken care of and you can choose among the others available for sale.

Aside from ensuring that the sugar glider you are getting is healthy, you should also confirm with your glider if the one you are planning to get is already of bonding age. You should get gliders that are about 8 to 12 weeks of age. This is the best time that sugar gliders bond with those around them and you should take advantage of this period to get close to your new pet.
